US President Barack Obama landed in the Turkish capital of Ankara last night for a two-day visit.
Urging a greater partnership with the Islamic world in an address to the Turkish parliament, Obama called the country an important ally in many areas, including the fight against terrorism and declared that the United States “will never be at war with Islam.”
At a news conference earlier with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Obama dealt with the issue of Armenian Genocide committed by Turks against Armenians during World War I.
Today he was asked if he was going to honor the pledge of recoginizing the Armenian Genocide or if he was going to change his mind. Obama’s response was that he would urge Turks and Armenians to continue a process “that works through the past in a way that is honest, open and constructive.”
